PIGGIN OUT @ VEG FISH FARM THAI RESTAURANT

This is one tough place to locate but it’s worth every drop of petrol and destroying the ozone layer driving around looking for the place. If you are familiar with Lookout Point, this place is like a kilometer further down.

When we first came here, there were nothing but a small tinnie winnie signboard and then a kilometer of steep up and down dirt road in pitch darkness (some ppl have been as “kua-cheong” as to advise to drive a 4wd in which a bit too overstated). But now, they have gathered enough money to pay for a decent signboard, to pay for lights leading to the place and tar to pave the road.

The restaurant is build by the banks of the river. I’ve never seen an end to a river (except for dams) but the river ends here. Fishes are reared in the river and are scooped up fresh everytime there’s an order. The place is huge and can really accommodate a lot of tables (hence no request for reservation is entertained. Just be there early).




The first and best item to order here is…. TODI! I absolutely love this drink and would always make sure I ta-pau back a bottle back. Cheap and doesn’t get you wasted (RM10 – 1.5litre)


Of course apart from TODI, we ordered a few dishes. First up was the Sotong Masak Pedas Coconut. Dish was a bit spicy but yummy nonetheless.


Next up was BBQ Japanese snail (Escargots) (RM12) – a total big big mistake. Never ever order Escargots BBQ without any sauce on it. After the first 3 snails, it felt like eating fresh garden snail sashimi style. And it just struck me now, aren’t Escargots = French Snails? Owner must have had some Japanese blood.


This is one dish that is a must to order. BBQ Telapia (RM30). The price is a bit steep for a Telapia but the size and freshness of the fish is really something to taste. Being just drawn out of the river nothing more than an hour before, the fish was super fresh and the minimalist approach (BBQ + salted on the outside) really brought out the flavor of the fish.


Of course we ordered Tom Yam Soup (RM18). One big pot that would easily serve 4 pax. Nothing much to shout about the soup . Just good old tom yam soup. Sorry I didn’t manage to capture a shot of the tom yam as I was busy bringing my daughter about.

They served BBQ crabs too but I thought the price was a bit too expensive (RM55/kg). Anyhow, I prefer my salted egg crab or baked crab (only available in Batu Kawan, Penang)


For desserts, we ordered a Tub Tim Krob (Red Ruby) (RM5) and the classic Mango Sticky Rice (RM8).

A minimalist approach was also taken to prepare the Red Ruby – lots of water, small amount of coconut and very countable red rubies (like 2) which really brought out the flavor of the fresh water and for RM5, I wouldn’t complain when I have to pay RM0.50 for plain water the next time.


The Mango Sticky Rice was a lot better but you really can’t mess up this dessert.



All in all, we still love this place for its fresh seafood and cooling ambience. Nothing like having your dinner by the river with fishes swimming around, a man singing Thai and Chinese songs at the other end of the river and sipping TODI while chasing away flies.
